Show Transcript welcome to sustainable Community Schools 101 and overview of the Chicago Public Schools sustainable Community Schools initiative sustainable Community Schools or SCS is a partnership with the Chicago Teachers Union currently 36 schools are part of this program each receiving between 420,000 and 500,000 schools are selected based on various metrics including the community hardship index demographics and Geographic diversity the SCS movement is rooted in black and brown Community struggles key historical events include the 2001 Little Village hunger strike which led to the little village social justice high school and the 2015 dyett High School hunger strike leading to its reopening and becoming an SCS SCS schools act as Community hubs providing comprehensive support for the entire Community beyond the traditional school day this community-led approach Fosters educational Justice and Equity promoting racial and social justice Resto of practices and shared leadership the SCS framework is Guided by 6 pillars these include engaging curricula and emphasis on high-quality teaching wraparound supports positive discipline practices like restorative justice parent and Community engagement and inclusive School leadership the principal's guiding SCS work include racial Justice and Equity transparency and trusting relationships self-determination and governance building from Community strength shared leadership and collaboration ation reflective learning culture and a whole child approach to education as jutu Brown says combining academic expertise with Community wisdom leads to real school transformation and Improvement this underscores the collaborative nature of the SCS model lead partner agency requirements for student and parent wraparound supports are stipulated in their contracts this includes meeting out of school time targets like 28 weeks of programming a minimum of 4 weeks of Summer programming and engaging 70 5% of targeted students for 45 hours or more of SCS opportunities the SCS model requires adherence to its principles and pillars in all decision-making essential requirements include an SCS leadership team and specific Staffing such as as as CS coordinator parent coordinator and restorative justice coordinator schools must also participate in professional development meet programming requirements and provide a dedicated space for lead partner agency staff the office of sustainable community City Schools implementation team supports schools by coaching coordinators LED partner agency staff and Leadership teams their work includes coaching on shared leadership onboarding administrators mediating tensions professional development and managing program operations here is a list of the schools and their Partners in the first SCS cohort covering various Community areas and Partnerships this slide displays the list of schools included in SCS cohort 2 across several community
